<p>Last Saturday a few of us got together to remember when life was good and we didn&#8217;t have global crises to worry about. The 1970&#8242;s were a great era for tacky stuff and one great example is the movie The Doll Squad, directed by <a class="zem_slink freebase/guid/9202a8c04000641f800000000080237b" title="Ted V. Mikels" rel="imdb" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0586399/">Ted V. Mikels</a> who was also responsible for several 70&#8242;s horror movies. It&#8217;s difficult to tell who the good girls and the bad girls are in The Doll Squad and the plot is pretty non-existent. What is omnipresent? Bad outfits, bad acting, ridiculous scenes of blowing fire, electrocution, spontaneous combustion. You get the picture. The trailer has all of the best tacky scenes so you don&#8217;t even need to watch it.</p>
<p><object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="500" height="405" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="src" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/3OLpIUgDGLM&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;color1=0xcc2550&amp;color2=0xe87a9f&amp;border=1" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="500" height="405" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/3OLpIUgDGLM&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1&amp;color1=0xcc2550&amp;color2=0xe87a9f&amp;border=1" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object></p>
<p>And then there was Police Woman. What a great show <a class="zem_slink freebase/guid/9202a8c04000641f8000000000297784" title="Angie Dickinson" rel="imdb" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001141/">Angie Dickenson</a> gave us in the 1970&#8242;s. I doubt it was inspired by The Doll Squad as it was far better. However, it definitely has it&#8217;s moments where you wonder &#8220;What the hell?&#8221;. The episode we watched called &#8220;<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0676435/" target="_blank">Nothing Left to Lose</a>&#8221; guest starred <a class="zem_slink freebase/guid/9202a8c04000641f80000000002bcf9c" title="Patty Duke" rel="imdb" href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001157/">Patty Duke</a> as police snitch La Rue Collins. La Rue is desperate to flee <a class="zem_slink freebase/guid/9202a8c04000641f80000000060b2879" title="Los Angeles" rel="geolocation" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=34.05,-118.25&amp;spn=0.1,0.1&amp;q=34.05,-118.25%20%28Los%20Angeles%29&amp;t=h">Los Angeles</a> and go back to Arkansas to her soon. She&#8217;s so desperate that she has to resort to continually singing &#8220;Me and <a class="zem_slink freebase/guid/9202a8c04000641f8000000000280019" title="Me and Bobby McGee" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Me_and_Bobby_McGee">Bobby McGee</a>&#8221; throughout the show!</p>
<blockquote><p>Freedom&#8217;s just another word for nothing left to lose,<br />
Nothing don&#8217;t mean nothing honey if it ain&#8217;t free, now now.<br />
And feeling good was easy, Lord, when he sang the blues,<br />
You know feeling good was good enough for me,<br />
Good enough for me and my Bobby McGee.</p>
<p>From the Kentucky coal mines to the California sun,<br />
Hey, Bobby shared the secrets of my soul.<br />
Through all kinds of weather, through everything we done,<br />
Hey Bobby baby? kept me from the cold.</p></blockquote>
<p>Here are all the lyrics to <a href="http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Me-Bobby-McGee-lyrics-Janis-Joplin/DB4A0F6EDA995B334825695900340DC4" target="_blank">Me and Bobby McGee</a> if you need a refresher. The tacky highlights of this episode were put together by my friend Douglas in this YouTube video below. Highlights: Patty Duke&#8217;s head banging into the car, the Liz Taylor <a class="zem_slink freebase/guid/9202a8c04000641f800000000006f521" title="Drag queen" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drag_queen">drag queen</a> wanting to get in the phone booth on a random LA corner, and the bus station gift shop attendant who was also the love child of <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002033/" target="_blank">Tyne Daly</a> and <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0680603/" target="_blank">Mackenzie Phillips</a>.</p>

<p><span id="more-158"></span></p>
<p>New York City is planning to introduce the same letter-sign system that California uses to announce to its restaurants&#8217; potential customers the health standards of each establishment. Starting in July of 2010, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/26/nyregion/26inspect.html" target="_blank">as reported by the New York Times</a>, NYC restaurants will be doing this. I think it&#8217;s about time. I always loved this about California.</p>
<p>It essentially works like a report card:</p>
<p>A = 90 &#8211; 100 points<br />
B = 80 &#8211; 89 points<br />
C = 70 &#8211; 79  points<br />
D = &gt;70 points</p>
<p>So the next question to ask is, how does a restaurant score points. Well, it&#8217;s an elaborate system but you can find the details of <a href="http://lapublichealth.org/eh/rfig/rfigfiles/documents2/rfigprnt.PDF" target="_blank">LA County&#8217;s system here (.pdf).</a> What LA County and many other counties in California that adopted the system saw was a huge increase in A and B restaurants after the program was in effect for a few years. This can only be good for our piece of mind as we&#8217;re dining out in New York. I for one am thrilled about this program. I simply will not go to any place that does not have an A. It&#8217;s that simple. I wonder how the &#8220;Mexican&#8221; places run by the Chinese will fare? I guess we&#8217;ll find out.</p>
<p>See more on restaurant ratings under <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restaurant_rating" target="_blank">Los Angeles County</a> on Wikipedia.</p>
<h3><strong>What do you think about this system?</strong><strong> </strong></h3>
