Meet The Breeds was a pet expo presented by The American Kennel Club. You could see almost all dog and cat breeds, see shows, and meet with various food and supply vendors. We saw almost all the breeds on display and this post shows photos of our experience. Continue reading →

Last Sunday we braved the cold, damp weather in NYC to walk (alright we took a cab) down to the Javits Center for one of the most interesting experiences I ever had there – by FAR. We went to Meet The Breeds 2009 presented by the American Kennel Club and the Cat Fanciers’ Association. We couldn’t go look at the kitties because of Adi’s allergies but we got to see so many great dog breeds that we had never even known about before.

One thing we weren’t happy about. There were no dachshunds there! We didn’t find out why but I guess they couldn’t get an official breeder in the area to participate. What a disapointment! But we did enjoy our experience and also got a lot of free puppy food, information, and even wee wee pads!

Here’s a pictorial recap of the breeds we saw, liked and took pictures of:

Beddington Terrier at Meet The Breeds

The Beddington Terrier was one of the first breeds we were taken with. What an odd-shaped head they have but they were very sweet and seemed to enjoy all the people coming around and petting them.

Here’s Adi with a very cute little Beagle:

Beagle at Meet The Breeds

And then there was the Borzoi, which is apparently a super fast breed:

Adi with a Borzoi at Meet The Breeds

Look at how lovely and proud this Border Collie is:

Border Collie at Meet The Breeds

I’ve always found the Bull Terrier to be one of those dogs that are so ugly that they are cute. I recently had an experience with one at the dog run where he insisted on sitting on the same bench as me and kept drooling with three tennis balls in his mouth. I did manage to avoid the drool and appreciated the cuteness. It’s a great mascot for Target stores, I think. Here’s the Bull Terrier we saw at the Javits Center:

Bull Terrier at Meet The Breeds

Berger Picard

The two breeds that we had never heard of before that we really loved were the Berger Picard, which is a French herding dog, and the Lagotto Romangnolo, which was originally bred in Italy to be a truffle hunting dog. Both were pretty hypoallergenic and neither sheds very much as they have hair rather than fur. Both of these breeds are known for being very loving and devoted.

The Lagotto Romangnolo are usually 28-35 pounds (male) and 24-30 pounds

Lagotto Ramagnolo

(female). The breeders of these dogs present at the show were exceptionally friendly. Since they are rare breeds, they are both rather expensive. I couldn’t track down a price on the Berger Picard but the Lagatto Romangnolo are about $2,500 regardless of whether they are bought in the U.S. or abroad. I wish I had taken a better picture but you’ll see some on their site.

Finally, I loved this breed called a Puli that I had never seen in person before. What a wild mop of hair they have. Their hair basically looks like super long dreadlocks hanging down. They can completely cover themselves with it as you can see happening with this one:

Puli at Meet The Breeds

We had a great time at this show and got a lot of great, free treats and food. So it was well worth the $12 per person admission price. But at the end of the day, the best part was coming home to our Romeo. Here’s Adi waking up with our one-year-old sweetheart after a nap:

Adi and Romeo Waking Up

What’s your favorite breed?

The passage of time is something that people universally agree on. It happens fast and the older you get, the faster it seems to go by. We haven’t had our silver-dapple “miniature” dachshund for a year but I have his birth certificate provided by the breeder that says loud and clear – October 17th.

So we celebrated a day early since my friend Juan was visiting and offered to throw us a dinner party. He made Chicken Marbella for 8 guests. And then we sang Happy Birthday to Romeo and let him eat the frosting off of a cupcake. Here’s the video:
