John Grant (feat. Midlake) I Wanna Go to Marz [Song of the Week]

Upon first listening to the former Czars frontman John Grant‘s solo album, created in collaboration with the band Midlake, I thought it was a bit odd. I didn’t quite know what to make of the “soft rock” with lyrics strange, dark, funny, and sad all at once. But the more I listened to it, the more I loved it. Considering Czars previous work, it’s no wonder that a beautiful sadness pervades through this work.

The National – “Bloodbuzz Ohio” [Song of the Week]

Right now I’m really into The National’s new album High Violet. It’s certainly a contender for this year’s list of top albums and “Bloodbuzz Ohio”, the first single from High Violet, may be the song of the year. So far, The National are the coolest band of 2010, possibly the coolest band to ever come out of Brooklyn. The video for “Bloodbuzz Ohio” is elegant, melancholic, artistic, and quirky.

Interpol – Lights [Song of the Week]

Interpol‘s music generally has this effect on me. The first time I listen to a song, I’m often a bit underwhelmed but with subsequent listens, I discover the layers that this band seems to subliminally weave into each and every lyric, each and every riff. I got an e-mail last week from them telling me they were stirring and when I continued reading I noticed the gift of a free download of their new single “Lights”. This time I wasn’t underwhelmed. I loved “Lights” from the minute I heard it and continue to love it even more with every subsequent listen.
