It’s that time of the year. RuPaul said in an interview with Rolling Stone I believe that by the end of Season 6, 75 queens will have been released into the wild. I love that!
Over this past weekend, 14 queens were announced, one by one, on various social media sites and then on Logo. They started by just showing photos but sleuthing fans on the Drag Race subreddit figured confirmed quickly who they were. If Ru’s quote is true, that means there will likely be a 15th surprise queen added at the start of the season.

I’ve enjoyed Rupaul’s Drag Race from its inception. It’s one of the few shows that’s kind of customized for a gay audience, although loved by straight people as well. Immersed in an NPR article on my iPhone while on the M16, I realize that we’re nearly at the last stop at 43rd and 9th. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the signature blonde streak through the hair of a young Asian man and his boyfriend as they we walking on 43rd Street toward 9th Avenue. I knew instantly that it was Rupaul’s Drag Race Season 3 finalist Manila Luzon (out of drag) and her boyfriend Season 2 contestant Sahara Davenport.

Every May, I feel a pang of sadness, despite how much I love Spring and the Summer that follows. The reason? May marks the end of one of my favorite shows, Ru Paul’s Drag Race. Most Mondays between January and May are spent watching or chit-chatting with friends about the bevy of queens Ru has assembled to compete for the title “The Next Drag Superstar”.
