My Top Songs of 2015

A great year for singles, tracks, whatever we call them these days. Here they are in alphabetical order with a bit of commentary, a snippet of lyrics and video.

Be sure to have a look at my top albums of 2015.

Beach House – ‘Beyond Love’

Don’t know what they’re talking about half the time but love the feel of this song as I do most everything they do.

Beyond love
The first thing that I do before I get into your house
I’m gonna tear off all the petals
From the rose that’s in your mouth

Chvrches – ‘Leave a Trace’

One of the catchiest songs of the year. Had it on repeat a lot on Spotify.

Take care to bury all that you can. Take care to leave a trace of a man.

Disclosure (feat. Sam Smith) – ‘Omen’

Anything that Disclosure does with Sam Smith is gold to me. Love this.

It’s an omen, caught my baby crying
Saw the silver lining
It must be an omen
Needed you to show me, without you I am lonely

Edward Sharp & The Magnetic Zeros – ‘Hot Coals’

Mesmerizing, and builds toward the end.

Hot coals laying on my motorcade
Jewelry gone, eyes still blue
Thin memories in love with you, my hoary fire
In love with you.

Frazee Ford – ‘Done’

Love everything about this!

Who told you you could rewrite the rules, and do you
really take me for a goddamn fool ’cause I’m done,
Oh whoa, I’m done

Grimes – ‘Flesh without Blood’

Just incredible. The single of the year for me!

You claw, you fight, you lose
Got a doll that looks just like you
Remember when we used to say
“I love you” almost every day
I saw a light in you
Going out as I closed our window
You never liked me anyway

John Grant – ‘Disappointing’

So much to this video, the lyrics. Could be interpreted in so many ways. Love John Grant.

Bassoons, trombones, and French horn sections
Bass clarinets and string art collections.
Owls and guitars when they do not match
Gilda, Kristen, Cheri, Tina, Amy and Rachel Dratch.

All these things, they’re just disappointing,
All these things, they’re just disappointing compared to you.
There’s nothing more beautiful than your smile as it conquers your face.
There’s nothing more comforting than to know, know you exist in this time, in this place.

Laura Marling – ‘False Hope’

Love that I live in the neighborhood she mentions!

Is it still okay that I don’t know how to be at all?
There’s a party uptown but I just don’t feel like I belong at all
Do I?
We stay in the apartment on the upper west side
And my worst problem is I don’t sleep at night
The woman downstairs just lost her mind,
And I don’t care how, I surely don’t care why
Why I know false hope
Why I know false hope

Lianne La Havas – “It’s What You Don’t Do’

I want to listen to more R&B that sounds like this!

I know what I got and I know where we’re going
You don’t need to show it, I already know it all
It’s what you don’t do, it’s what you don’t say
(It’s what you don’t do) I know you love me, I don’t need proof
It’s what you don’t do, the games you don’t play
(It’s what you don’t do) I know you love me, I don’t need proof

Madonna – ‘Bitch I’m Madonna’

I simply couldn’t resist this major cheese factory despite how much I tried. No one but Madonna could pull this off, especially at age 57. Go girl!

You’re gonna love this
You can’t touch this
Cause I’m a bad bitch

Madonna (feat. Nas)- ‘Veni Vidi Vici’

A reprise of her career? Somehow, this Madonna rap works.

I Expressed myself, came Like a Virgin down the aisle
Exposed my naked ass and I did it with a smile
And when it came to S.E.X. I know I walked the Borderline
And when I struck a pose all the Gay Boys lost their minds

Miguel – ‘Coffee’

Super catchy.

I wish I could paint our love
These moments and vibrant hues
Wordplay, turns in to gun play
And gun play turns into pillow talk
And pillow talk turns into sweet dreams
Sweet dreams turns into fucking in the morning

New Order – ‘Superheated’

An established artist that sounds just as good as they did in the 1980’s. I had this track (the last one on the album) on repeat often this year.

However you want it, it’s my desire
Girl you’ve got me hanging like a bird down on a wire
We are so different, yet we’re the same
Things that I remember, that I wish I could change

Other Lives – ‘Easy Way Out’

Oh you control the weather and I’ll pay the rent
We can be happy, no we can be happy-
If we could find an easy way out

Rupaul – ‘Step it Up’

So funny. I love my Ru!

All you biological females, who used to have the upper hand
It ain’t like that no more honey it’s a got real tough up in here.
You got your Trisexual
You got your Bisexual
You got your Inner Sexual
Girl you have to step your Pussy up!

Soak – ‘Sea Creatures’

She’s one to watch out for.

Sea creatures
I wish they would disappear…
They don’t know what love is
Throw it around like it’s worthless
They don’t know what love is!

Tame Impala – ‘Let it Happen’

An instant classic that I couldn’t stop listening to. Love it.

It’s always around me, all this noise
But not really as loud as the voice saying
Let it happen, let it happen (It’s gonna feel so good)
Just let it happen, let it happen
