Immersed in an NPR article on my iPhone while on the M16, I realize that we’re nearly at the last stop at 43rd and 9th. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed the signature blonde streak through the hair of a young Asian man and his boyfriend as they we walking on 43rd Street toward 9th Avenue. I knew instantly that it was Rupaul’s Drag Race Season 3 finalist Manila Luzon (out of drag) and her boyfriend Season 2 contestant Sahara Davenport.
Impatient that the bus had yet to open its doors for the final stop because of backed up Lincoln-tunnel traffic, I politely asked the bus driver if I could get out where we were. He obliged and I started running toward 9th Avenue. I wasn’t sure if they had turned left or right and figured that I had lost them since it had been a few minutes. I started walking fast and then noticed them ahead of me – around 46th Street, I believe. I ran up beside them and asked
“Do you mind if a Fanila (what Manila calls her fan) says hello?”
They must have thought I was a crazy stalker the way I was running but both Sahara and Manila were both very friendly. I said how much I loved their performances on Drag Race and asked about upcoming tours, confirming that this information is on their sites.
We said our goodbyes and then I thought “Why shouldn’t I ask for a photo?” So I waited a bit and then asked them.We chatted a little more and then they crossed the street. Looking at Manila’s twitter feed, it seems like they may be in their way to see Jessica Wild tonight.
So now I’ve met the top two finalists on Season 3 of Rupaul’s Drag Race. We met Raja a few days before she was announced as this year’s winner. We hope that we can meet Alexis Mateo in St. Pete, FL since we travel there quite regularly.
