Thanks to Jason Bentley and KCRW‘s Morning Becomes Eclectic, I heard the song “Oh Bondage, Up Yours” for the first time, and loved it. Sadly, it also brought the news that its singer, Poly Styrene of the punk band X-Ray Spex passed away at 53 after a long battle with breast cancer.
I had never heard X-Ray Spex before even though it sounds like something I should know and would have known. Here’s an Entertainment Weekly article that talks more about Poly Styrene. Listen to “Oh Bondage, Up Yours” below. It’s a classic and obviously influential in several feminist girl punk bands today.
