My Top 20 Albums of 2009

2. Editors – In This Light and On This Evening (Track: The Boxer)

Although my friends Pavel and Chris disagree, I believe that In This Light and On This Evening is by far the strongest collection of songs by British post-punk outfit Editors. It boasts a significant shift from 2005′s An End Has a Start as vocalist Tom Smith and his band experiment with synthesizers. This is most evident on the lead single “Papillon”, which sounds like an homage to the dark pop of Sisters of Mercy and Joy Division. The brilliant “You Don’t Know Love” and “The Boxer” brood with confidence, placing Smith’s distinctive vocals center stage. Despite my love for this album, I will agree with my friends that there is no moment like the all-time classic “Munich” but given the strength of this work, that could change. The featured track is “The Boxer”.
